I took a little “time off” and soaked in John 5 a few days ago. Jesus had healed a man on the Sabbath, and was taking heat from the religious leaders for breaking the rules on the Sabbath. One of the things He said is written in verse 17, “My Father is always working, and so am I.”
The Father is ALWAYS at work. Even on the Sabbath. We can rest because He doesn’t. He doesn’t need to rest, but I do. We do. And we are wise to take time to immerse ourselves in His word, knowing He is at work as we do. Something significant can happen because HE is at work when we stop working.
Jesus called out the religious leaders because they used the Scriptures for things God didn’t intend. “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me” (John 5:39)
The power of the Word is personal and relational, not simply literary or imagined. It’s about the person of Jesus and not just the printed words. Jesus works through the Scriptures to draw us to a deeper place of knowing HIM.
Everything in the Bible points to Jesus.
“I want to know Christ….” (Philippians 3:10a)
That is what I am thinking about today.
Father, help me to apply your word personally and relationally. May my fascination be with YOU, the Person, more than just the poetry and prose.
