“And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.” ~1 Kings 19:12~
God was not in the wind or the earthquake or the fire. He spoke in a gentle whisper. Why a whisper?
We look for the powerful, which might be found in the unexpected quiet. We expect God to show up in big ways, but sometimes He is very present in the small things that could easily go unnoticed and unheard.
A whisper is intimate and personal. It was a gentle whisper.
To hear it we must be quieted, in body and spirit and mind.
Even big noises need not distract the intimate whisper of God.
Sometimes God does speak through the wind, the earthquake, the fire, and other dynamics of creation. His earthquake and wind and fire voices are loud and distinct. Maybe sometimes we need that strong voice. But His whisper is closer and personal.
Some might say that to hear his voice, we can just read His written Word out loud, with a quiet voice.
To hear His quieter voice we need to lean in, fine tune the frequency, and listen actively and well. Maybe that’s the point.
